Super Bowl halftime show reviews 2024: The best, worst reactions to Usher's performance | Sporting News (2024)

Super Bowl 58 needed a refresh after a dour first half display between the Chiefs and 49ers.

Fortunately, there was at least one performer who embraced the Sin City spotlight.

For some 14 minutes, Usher crooned, pranced and dazzled his way into the hearts of spectators, reminding people just how many hits he has in his closet.

The eight-time Grammy winner performed a wide array of hits, some from his days as a fresh-faced teenager, others during his late 2000s resurgence.

He had plenty of help for the occasion. Some of Usher's closest collaborators made cameos during his set list, including Lil' Jon, Ludacris, Will.I.Am and H.E.R.

Super Bowl 2024 halftime show reviews

Usher mimicked his idol, the late Michael Jackson, strutting into the proceedings with a glimmering white glove.

That wasn't all for the 45-year old, though. Partway through his performance, he swapped glowing white sequins for black-and-blue ones. He paired them with roller skates, racing across the platform like a young Connor McDavid.

Ultimately, though, it was about the music. And it was with the mic in his hand that Usher truly shined. Nostalgia swept over the Allegiant Stadium concourses as the R&B supernova delivered hit after hit after hit. "Yeah!"? Check. "My Boo?" You bet. "Confessions Pt. II?" Obviously.

By and large, it seemed as if onlookers were more than appreciative of his offering.

8:36 p.m.:It had to end with "Yeah!", didn't it? Lil' Jon and Ludacris offering their services alongside the R&B icon. Luda has got his hair flowing like it's the early-2000s. A fitting conclusion to an impressive showcase.

How to watch Usher in the Super Bowl 58 halftime show

The Super Bowl 58 halftime show will be broadcast on CBS following the end of the second quarter of the 49ers vs. Chiefs' clash. Cord-cutters can find the action on Paramount+ or fubo, which offers a free trial for new subscribers.

Super Bowl halftime show start time

  • 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. local time(approximate time)

With Super Bowl 58 starting at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. local time), halftime should be ~8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. local time).

It's an inexact science, admittedly. NFL games are fairly unpredictable, with various stoppages scuppering the flow of the game.

Still, if you're wanting to view Usher's showcase in its entirety, you're better off flocking to the television around 8 o'clock ET. That's around when the football should cease, if only for a fleeting moment.

The halftime is usually about 15-20 minutes long, so the performance should be roughly 10 songs, some truncated and remixed.
