We want to congratulate Chuck Baur on 15 years of dedicated service. Chuck is truly a versatile company leader serving in many positions over the years. He has been in Contract Administration, Business Development and currently serves as our Director of Human Resources. All while assisting many other team members with various projects as well. He’s looked to by many as the example of dedication, adaptability, work-ethic, and consistency. We appreciate everything you’ve done and continue to do ‘Dad’!

S&N had the pleasure to be the lunch sponsor for the 31st Annual Junior Achievement Pete Orr Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday, May 20th at Roanoke Country Club sponsored by Steel Dynamics!
S&N’s world class chefs did a fabulous lunch that consisted of smoked ribs, barbecue chicken and sausage. And some of the best macaroni and cheese around!
One S&N golf team was fielded by Brian Morehouse and Todd Butcher with S&N, along with Steve Bennett with GloFiber and one of the championship hockey players from the Roanoke Railyard Dawgs Nick Divito. This team took 3rd place in their division. Our other fielded team was Sidney Tolley, Ewell Lester, Brendan Dalglish from S&N and Damon Bailey from Burgland Chevrolet. Great job teams and awesome support for a wonderful cause.

The 20th Annual Gaff & Go Rodeo sponsored by @altecinc on May 17th and 18th, held at the Meadowview Events Park in Dosewell, VA brought teams from around the area to complete in many different events. Friday was sunny and a great day to watch lineman from different organizations compete. Saturday the sun didn’t shine and the rain was coming down, but that didn’t stop people from coming out and watching their co-workers or family members compete.
S&N was glad to be part of this event as a vendor and also having some of our team members be judge’s for different events. A big thank you to Mike Lilly, Chris Underwood, and Conner Burns for their time and efforts put forth to make this a successful event for all.

The WIA Connect X 2024 commenced this morning in Atlanta, Georgia, featuring a warm welcome to the city by Mayor Andre Dickens. Patrick Halley, President & CEO, kicked off the conference with an inspiring presentation highlighting the current status of the wireless industry. Among the attendees was our very own Joe Phillips, Director of Design Engineering at S&N, captured observing a cutting-edge splice on fiber connection utilized by both the Wireless and FTTX industries.

While attending the LRPC meeting today at NC811 headquarters, Brian Morehouse with S&N and Ann Rushing, Education Manager with NC811, unveiled the partnership they have created in sponsoring the NC811 Mini-Ex for 2024 and 2025.
S&N is looking forward to attending many of the events that the mini-ex will be on display throughout the year in different regions of North Carolina.

S&N attended the SC/NC Joint UCC Conference held at the Marriott in Charleston, SC. This event brought those within the utility industry together between the two states. Great breakout sessions and guest speakers were on hand for this event. Also had some time for some fun team activities.

Congratulations to our Spring 2024 Fiber Broadband Association OpTIC Path Certification Class! OpTIC certification is offered through a partnership of the Fiber Broadband Association , Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives, and S&N Communications, Inc.

As part of the program, they took the time to recognize all the locators that were in attendance for Locators Safety & Appreciation Week #LSAW. To further broaden awareness when it comes to damage prevention, S&N teamed up with @northcarolina811 to display a tailgate wrap. The wrap is a reminder to the general public to call in dig tickets for excavations. This wrap will also be visible on our job sites throughout North Carolina, and will be a subtle reminder to our construction crews to prevent damage to underground utilities.

This week is Women in Construction Week. We would like to highlight two of our Directors, Joy Yount (Left) and Tracie Deane (Right). They spent the day volunteering to speak to young women coming out of high school to consider a career in the industry. High School students from across Central Virginia came to the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives training center in Palmyra VA today to participate in their annual Girl Power Day. The goal of the event is to give access to the power and fiber industry to women who are entertaining a career in the field. This year had four times as many students as last year which is a blessing to see.
We were so pleased to be a small part of this event. From our instructors Joy Yount, Tracie Deane, Corey Hall, Andy Gibson and to our fabulous cook team DJ Thomas, Chris Grant, Zach Grant, and Isaiah Cross.

The Lake Monticello Volunteer Rescue Squad received a Stryker Xpedition powered chair on Friday.
According to a release, the chair was purchased using money donated by the owners and employees of S&N Communications and AAP Construction.
The chair, valued at $16,500, can assist in moving patients, up to 400 pounds, up or down stairs or over certain terrain.
It uses a flexible belt track to increase traction and minimize any damage to stairways and surfaces.

Many rural areas have poles that can’t be reached by bucket truck and lineworkers must climb each pole to attach the fiber. The co-op’s fiber network now is available to 40,000 homes and businesses, 90% of which lack other options for broadband service, said Bruce Maurhoff, Firefly’s senior vice president and chief operating officer.
“We placed 14.5 million feet of strand and lash fiber on poles and another 3 million feet in conduit underground,” he said. “That is enough fiber to reach from the first pole where we began in Appomattox all the way to Anchorage, Alaska. And we did it in 52 months.”

Following the onset of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global lockdowns, the need for reliable broadband and increased wireless bandwidth across the world became more urgent than ever.
From companies embracing remote work, to online schooling and telehealth, the need to get every home in North America connected became a necessity. Subsequently, there has been a massive influx of funds necessary to complete these significant projects from federal, state, and local governments to RUS grants, RDOF Funding, CARES Act Funding, ReConnect, VATI, as well as numerous others.
This impact has now finally allowed rural America to compete with urban America in both business and educational opportunities. Helping to carry out this vast transformation is S&N Communications (S&N).
With the diverse utility industry currently booming, it has become fruitful with opportunities in every corner of business, including ever-expanding wireless networks, power distribution upgrades, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and rural broadband buildouts.
However, along with those opportunities comes a set of challenges, such as workforce shortages, material delays, and equipment shortages.
Putting challenges aside, Sean Davis, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of S&N, believes that the rural broadband push is perhaps the most exciting development to occur in recent history.
“During the past few decades in the telecom world, last-mile residents, businesses and schools were often overlooked by major telecom companies due to lower returns on their investments,” he opens.
“I have always been interested in this field mainly because of my father’s experience in the industry. I remember many of his interesting stories throughout his career. While it can be challenging, it can also be rewarding,” Davis adds.

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC) recently celebrated the conclusion of its rural broadband project and reaching the milestone of 20,000 connections. CVEC launched its fiber project in 2018 and offers internet and phone service through Firefly Fiber Broadband SM, its wholly-owned subsidiary.
CVEC and Firefly accelerated their efforts to make broadband service available to all 39,000 CVEC members
and completed mainline fiber construction of over 4,000 miles of fiber at the end of 2022 for a project total of $150 million.
The project was scheduled to be completed at the end of 2023, but construction concluded a full year early.
S&N is proud to be a partner with such a great group like CVEC and look forward to working together in the future.
