Nutrition Information

Here is a great FREE downloadable article on poultry nutrition. Page 21 has Layer nutritional requirements. Other pages have nutritional requirements for ducks, ratites, turkeys, etc. https://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/summaries/summary.php?pub=333 If you have difficulty downloading the article please email us at HandHFeed@gmail.com and we will send you a .pdf copy.

Hens fed a flax seed fortified ration lay eggs that are higher in Omegas. A report by Farrell (1995) studied human volunteers who consumed ordinary eggs or omega-3 enriched eggs at a rate of 7 eggs per week. After 20 weeks, the plasma levels of omega-3 fatty acids in volunteers consuming the enriched eggs were significantly higher than in those consuming the ordinary eggs and the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids was reduced. There were only small differences in the plasma cholesterol. He concluded that an enriched egg could supply approximately 40-50% of the daily requirement for omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Millet is rich in B vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese. It is an energy food! This is especially helpful in the winter months for warmth, and for show birds that must maintain a certain amount of energy to be successful in the show ring. The better your birds feel the more they will forage and the healthier they will be.

Kelp is rich in trace elements and minerals, calcium, iodine, and dextrose which aids in metabolic function. It fulfills the requirements in humans animals alike for trace elements that are often lacking in land-grown feeds and pastures (due to erosion or leaching). Kelp is a dependable source of over 50 minerals and elements including iodine, 21 amino acids, and 12 vitamins (including A, C, B, thiamine, and vitamin E or tocopherol). Because the minerals are in plant tissue they are easily digested and assimilated. Many of the trace minerals contained in kelp aid in producing enzymes which in turn promote healthy bodily function.

Kelp fed regularly to chickens will:

  • Increase egg production in your hens
  • Increase the iodine content of your eggs
  • Darken the yolk and the skin color of the bird
  • Strengthen the egg shell

Black-oil sunflower seeds contain more protein than other varieties of sunflower seeds for wild birds. Like other birds that crowd feeders and gobble down sunflower seeds, chickens utilize the oil in the seeds to aid in keeping them warm and dry in cold or inclement weather. Including sunflower seeds in the diet of laying hens that are shown helps to give their feathers the glossy look prized by poultry judges.

According to BackyardChickens.com, a website dedicated to people raising home flocks, sunflower seeds aids in laying hens’ egg production. A Brazilian study found increased egg weight in hens fed sunflower seeds. Its researchers stated that increasing levels of sunflower seeds in daily rations did not affect feed intake, feed conversion or yolk color. When sunflower seeds are fed to hens, feeders should use the same amount they would use of commercial chicken feed.
Probiotics are added to each of our rations. The use of probiotics in your flock on a regular basis will increase feed efficiency, thriftiness, and vigor. Probiotics will help your baby chicks start faster and grow out better. Anytime you use anti-biotics it tears down – the use of probiotics builds up!

Diatomaceous Earth added to poultry feed daily can result in fewer worms, less mortality and better feathering. There are many different trace minerals contained in diatomaceous earth that are beneficial to poultry. (poultrykeeper.com)
